WHEN LONDON MEETS WENZHOU - SKETCHING AND EXHIBITION IN WENZHOU BY CHINESE AND BRITISH ARTISTS PROPOSAL
Author:lsl   Add time:2019-07-04 11:11   Browse:120

Event Background

When we think of the history that how Western art develops, what first come to our mind are Greek art, Roman art, Renaissance art, Impressionist art and contemporary art. As an oriental, we should also consider the difference between Chinese art as the representative of Oriental Art and Western art. Based on the consideration of the possibility of the future development of human art and the possibility of the future development of Chinese art, we have organized a range of cultural exchanging activities, taking the communication between Chinese artists and European and American artists as an opportunity to establish cultural communication and friendship between Chinese and artists from different countries.

The UK has led the development of the world for hundreds of years, incorporating cultures of the world and starting the exploration of human wisdom. So is the art, the Renaissance started in Italy and it influenced Britain rapidly, and many artists appeared in Britain besides, many classical works were born. Therefore, we lay our views on the development of Western art in London during the period before the birth of Impressionism in London.

We started the series of Meet from London, because London, as the city of art, has been influenced by the "contemporary art" of the USA in terms of culture for nearly a hundred years. There is not enough living space for the traditional artists and traditional art. After the pondering and the communication between Chinese and British artists for more than a year, some attempts and discussions have been done regarding the relationship between nature and creation, which can be said that some progress has been made.

We believe that the communication between Chinese artists and British artists for the following next year will open up our thinking on the development of Eastern and Western cultures during the past five or six hundred years, and will enhance the interaction and cultural recognition between the two countries from the perspective of the artists of two countries.

The Significance and Effect of the Event

1. This is a collision between Chinese refined culture and Western candid art, which is also a high-level cultural interaction between China and Britain regarding cultural exchanges of The Belt and Road Initiative.

Some historians once said that art preserves the history of mankind. If we look from the aspect of the development of human society, culture inherits history, and art plays an important part of it. We know that economic development is very important, but what we really like to talk about and what makes us proud is the culture. The British are proud to enjoy the artistic beauty that created by human beings, and the Chinese often consider their nation as the country with five thousand years civilization.

Economy has been the main subject if we look at the past exchanges between contemporary China and Britain, while cultural exchanges are relatively rare. The official cooperation is often limited to the exchange of large-scale exhibitions and activities, which cannot really go deep into the folks. Therefore, in the era when China returns to great prosperity and strength, high-level folk art exchanges and collisions have become a trend.

Therefore, by the chance of this Sketching and Exhibition in Wenzhou by Chinese and British Artists and the seminars will be held during the exhibition, the differences and similarities between Chinese and Western cultures will be sorted out, and more in-depth cooperation will be sought. The deep exchanges between Chinese and British artists will also break the national boundaries and have more reflections on the art that we share, and which is significance of culture and communication.

2. Art works and art exhibitions by Chinese and British artists will play an important role in publicizing Wenzhou's cultural image and promoting Wenzhou's cultural tourism.

The geographical and cultural attractions in Wenzhou are countless. Guo Xi, a painter of the Song Dynasty once said, "There are many beautiful mountains in the southeast", referring to Yandang Mountain. Although Yandang Mountain is well-known outside the country, but it has not been in the eyes of European and American people, let alone the world influence of Jiangxinyu and Nanxi River. If the one’s culture is well spread, then its tourism will be well known. Art will leave an important legacy for one place. This reflects the relationship between Pan Tianshou and Yandang Mountain. An artist or a piece of work will be branded with its cultural identity, and it will also become a local cultural symbol. The last dinner by Leonardo Da Vinci, the David statue by Michelangelo, and the entrance of the Louvre Pyramid designed by I. M. Pei, and those can be found everywhere.

The 20 outstanding Chinese and British artists will undoubtedly create a large number of works on mountains, rivers and humanity of Wenzhou in 15 days, which may influence our time profoundly. Firstly, these works have a wide range of extensibility, and the original works can be collected by the British, or by Chinese museums or private collectors. Anyway, since these works show Wenzhou's geomorphology and customs, and each painting has Wenzhou's imprint, they are disseminating Wenzhou's cultural information. Secondly, these works can be made into various derivatives, which can change the current situation that the derivatives are homogeneous and culture and tourism are featureless in Wenzhou. Thirdly, we will select good works that will be published in the picture albums in both Chinese and English after the event, so as to maximize the dissemination. This is the short-term social effect of works of art.

Moreover, the exhibition "When London Meets Wenzhou" will be held in Wenzhou and the UK after the publication of the collection, as the British artists participating in the exhibition are all mainstream artists, which will help to make it to cultural core area of Britain and Europe, and it will be approved by the British. The published collection will also be sent to major British libraries and scientific research institutions to maximize the publicity effect of the event.

We will also cooperate with the promotion of Wenzhou cultural and tourism attractions in the UK, during the exhibition,

3. This is also the reflection of Wenzhou people to economic development and culture in the past 40 years of reform and opening up.

The words “Wenzhou people” have been heard all over the world since the reform and opening up. Wenzhou's economic model has brought new shining moments to China. Wenzhou businessmen are all over five continents. Wenzhou, a place with a history of two thousand years and an important heritage for mankind, has been forgotten. Dongou Kingdom with a long history; Wang Xizhi's books, Xie Lingyun's landscape poems and Tao Hongjing's writings in the Wei and Jin Dynasties; Yongjia School in the Southern Song Dynasty; Southern Opera in the Yuan Dynasty originated from here; artists of Xie Tingdun in the Ming Dynasty…Numerous artistic and cultural events have influenced the process of Chinese culture, which created a unique region.

However, since the reform and opening up for the last 40 years, Wenzhou people have just begun to pay attention to culture while paying attention to the rapid economic development. This is the significance of many large-scale event held in Wenzhou in recent years and also including this event, which is—— “culture benefiting the people“. Just as Wenzhou government began to build "Moxiang (scent of ink)Wenzhou", Wenzhou people began to pay attention to "improving people's needs for a better life" when the pursuit of the economy has reached at a certain time. By such artistic event, which will open up the boundaries between the common people and the elegant arts and bring the beauty to them, also, present a different vision of aesthetic Wenzhou scenery through the eyes and brushes of British artists, which is also in line with the current needs of the country for the overall layout of local development.

4. The reports of the mainstream media in China and the UK have brought Wenzhou's humanities and natural landscapes outside the province and even go abroad through this event.

The event will be reported by a variety of modern media. The mainstream media in China include: CCTV Calligraphy and Painting Channel, Chinese Studies Channel, Zhejiang TV Station; People's Daily, Xinhua Network, Chinn.org.cn and other mainstream websites; besides, The Art, Art Observation, China Art Weekly, Chinese Culture Daily, agwypl.com and other mainstream art media.

The media in the UK: such as British TV, British Art Magazine, Global Times and European Times. British Art Magazine will also send accompanying journalists to follow up.

There is no borders and aggression in the way of exchanging by art, but it is an important method of being liked by others, and it has gradually become one of the means of cultural diplomacy in China. Through a series of artistic events, as well as through these media, landscape, humanities, information of Wenzhou are disseminated at home and abroad in a quiet way, which helps China make friends in the new time. This may also be one of the reasons why the event is significant.
